Mikko has Ph.D. in Structural Fire Engineering. He has over 15 years of experience in performance-based structural fire safety analysis of steel, timber, and concrete structures to achieve optimal, fire-safe structural solutions ranging from detail analysis to evaluation of entire structural systems. Mikko shares his findings through contributions to industry conferences, as well as academic papers and lectures. He also influences SFE design guidelines for his country of origin, Finland. Mikko leverages performance-based solutions to meet project goals. He often justifies exposed structures, eliminating the need for excessive protection materials and delivering major cost savings that would not be possible with a prescriptive method. His portfolio of work includes major commercial, industrial, and residential projects in Finland and in the US, including a 14-story mass timber high-rise - the tallest timber building in Finland.
Mikko on väitellyt tekniikan tohtoriksi rakenteiden paloturvallisuudesta vuonna 2012. Hänellä on yli 15 vuoden kokemus teräs-, betoni- ja puurakenteiden analysoinnista palotilanteessa sisältäen mm. kokonaisten rakennuksen runkojen ja kriittisten detaljien tarkastelua. Mikko osallistuu aktiivisesti alan konferensseihin, akateemisiin artikkeleihin ja luennoi tiiviisti alan aiheista. Lisäksi hän osallistuu rakenteellisen paloturvallisuuden ohjeiden kehittämiseen Suomessa mm. toimiessaan Teräsrakenneyhdistyksen paloryhmän puheenjohtajana. Mikko on hyödyntänyt rakenteiden toiminnallista mitoitusta lukuisissa erilaisissa projekteissa mm. palosuojauksen optimoinnissa, suojaamattomien teräs- ja puurakenteiden perustelemisessa sekä rakennuksissa, joiden suunnittelu ei onnistuisi käyttäen tavanomaisia menetelmiä, kuten 14-kerroksinen puukerrostalo Joensuu Lighthouse.
