Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) is a nationally recognized medical education, research and service hub that has been turning out healthcare experts and technology for generations while providing advanced care for patients from children to seniors.

It is one of the few universities in the United States that exclusively educates doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, and public health professionals. In addition, the biomedical, environmental, and informational research performed by their teams improves healthcare products and services, not just for the Pacific Northwest, but for all those who need it.

Collaboration on the accessibility, life safety, fire protection and hazardous materials safety needs of OHSU began with one of our acquired legacy firms and continues today.

While we have supported other campuses and laboratories for this innovative healthcare group, most of our work has supported the main 116-acre Marquam Hill campus nestled into the serene wooded southwest hills of the Portland metro area.

This campus has an extraordinary site design, whereas the facilities consider the effects of surrounding occupants with nature through stunning high-rise views, ground-level walking paths and a sleekly designed aerial tram that offers a dynamic skyline perspective of the region.

Our evolving list of work completed at the main OHSU campus is as follows:

  1. OHSU Casey Eye Institute is a premier academic medical center providing eye care for adults and children in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Our team provided UBC to IBC Conversion (2013).
  2. The Center for Health & Healing is the hospital’s outpatient facility located at the South Waterfront at the base of the aerial tram. The center has two towers connected by sky bridges and an underground parking garage. We worked on Building 1 and the adjoining OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. Our team provided plan reviews and developed alternates with engineering judgements for this site.
  3. The Kohler Pavilion houses 146 beds, including neuroscience, oncology units, intensive care, and an eight-room operating suite with space to expand. One entire floor of the building is devoted to sterile processing to support surgical services. This site also includes a four-level, 450 car, post-tensioned concrete parking structure with a new by-pass road flying overhead. Our team provided plan review and systems evaluation.
  4. Doernbecher Children’s Hospital is a four-story pediatric hospital, and a showpiece of the OHSU campus. Doernbecher is connected to the existing OHSU Hospital, allowing the two facilities to share existing hospital support services. Our team completed a UBC to IBC conversion and evaluations of floors and connections of the basement to the new garage, and the walkway to Hatfield Research Center.
  5. The main hospital connects to Hatfield Research Center, Doernbecher Children's Hospital, and the Portland Veteran's Administration (VA) Hospital via skybridge. Our team brought the hospital up to date from previously permitted UBC compliance to the current OSSC and updated the Fire & Life Safety Master Plan. We evaluated all of the smoke compartments and eliminated the need for some fire and fire/smoke dampers, eliminating weeks' worth of inspections.
  6. The Mark O. Hatfield Research Center is a fully sprinklered 14-story building that is connected to the OHSU Hospital through various walls and bridges. Our team supported the conversion of office spaces to I-2 spaces, including developing a necessary appeal.
  7. Sam Jackson Hall is one of the original buildings on the campus. It is connected to the Physicians Pavilion through a sky bridge from the 3rd floor and to OHSU Hospital through a sky bridge that extends over Sam Jackson Park Road to the 11th floor of the Hospital. It houses patient clinics along with administrative and academic offices. Our team supported UBC to IBC conversion and managed options for relocating a MRI site.
  8. The Lamfrom Biomedical Research Building is an 11-story building that provides state-of-the-art research laboratories, associated support and conference areas, an expanded vivarium, and the University’s Advanced Imaging Research Center. Our team provided plan reviews (2018 – 2021), developed a code appeal and a control area strategy.
