This ambitious project is poised to become Europe’s most extensive and exclusive shopping centre. Nestled just 25 minutes away from the bustling city centre and conveniently located near Linate airport, Westfield Milan is destined to redefine the concept of shopping, leisure and entertainment.

The company’s clear and ambitious vision for the project involved creating a 200,000-square-metre multifunctional space that seamlessly combines world-class shopping with entertainment and leisure facilities. This expansive development promises to set new standards for retail experiences in Europe.

The project met a significant hurdle when it was discovered that Westfield Milan’s innovative design did not align with local fire regulations. Comprehensive fire engineering solutions were needed to help achieve the aesthetic and functional goals without compromising safety.

Jensen Hughes experts were brought in to address the project’s compliance issues. Leveraging the International Building Code, we used a performance-based approach that allowed many unique design features to be incorporated into the building's structure while ensuring that fire safety standards were met.

The effort invested in addressing the regulatory challenges paid off handsomely. Westfield Milan gained over 10,000 square metres of additional retail space, allowing the company to build in line with their original vision. Such an expansion will undoubtedly contribute to the shopping centre's exclusivity and overall appeal.

Successfully navigating the regulatory landscape also required close collaboration with Italian authorities. Working hand-in-hand with local officials, our team was able to gain approval for a design that not only met but exceeded international best practices.
