The NSW Government’s $632 million Campbelltown Hospital Stage 2 Redevelopment ushered in a new era of world-class healthcare for Southwest Sydney. This comprehensive project introduced a modern clinical services building and updated existing structures, significantly expanding the range of clinical services and medical specialties available.
The Campbelltown Hospital Stage 2 Redevelopment included:
- A new clinical services building with modern wards and patient facilities
- New women’s health services including birthing suites and maternity ward
- Increased children’s outpatient and ambulatory care services
- Increased children’s surgical services
- New nuclear medicine and dental services
- State-of-the-art operating theatres and Intensive Care Unit
- An expanded Emergency Department with more treatment spaces
- Modern mental health units that are centrally located
- Increased access to outpatient and ambulatory care services
- Upgraded medical imaging equipment
- Increased cancer services.
Our Building Code Consulting team played a crucial role in ensuring the hospital's safety and functionality for the community's benefit for years to come. The key services we provided the project included Building Surveying / Building Code of Australia (BCA), Accessibility consulting, and providing section 6.28(2) Crown Certifier compliance checks and approvals during the design phase. Additionally, Jensen Hughes offered ongoing Crown Certifier monitoring throughout the 36-month construction period, concluding in June 2023.
Some of the key challenges that the Jensen Hughes team faced during the project included:
- Substantial earthquake movement joints due to large building footprint and effects on façade design.
- Anti-ligature design requirements created fire safety and accessibility compliance conflicts that needed to be resolved for the mental health wards, representing a significant portion of the building's floor space.
- Detailing and executing fire rating of fire wall intersections and terminations at curtain wall facades.
- Statutory and wayfinding design and implementation.
- Ensuring consistent execution of build and fit-out compliance throughout the whole of the building and its numerous construction teams and trades.
- Weatherproofing external door thresholds at ground level and upper-level courtyards due to accessibility compliance requirements.
Jensen Hughes is proud to have delivered timely and essential BCA and Accessibility design compliance advice, alongside Crown BCA Certifier construction monitoring services, to meet the dynamic needs of our clients - CPB Contractors, Health Infrastructure and Southwestern Sydney Local Health District.
